FAQs
THE GLASSHOUSE
What does The Glasshouse project do?
The Glasshouse is a social enterprise offering second chances to women reaching the end of their sentence in UK prisons. Our mission is to reduce reoffending through horticultural training and employment. Our team of ex-offenders care for, grow and propagate temperate house plants whilst training to reach a recognised qualification in horticulture. Upon release, we offer help with job placement and housing, as the primary causes of reoffending are lack of secure housing and employment.
We sell our very special house plants directly through our online shop, as well as our bespoke corporate gifting service and plantscaping for offices, hospitality and retail.
Where are The Glasshouseβs containers made?
Our containers, pots and baskets are sourced from artisanal, ethical sources. Our standard handmade Sutton pot with matching tray is designed by Berg in Denmark and made of grey terracotta in Italy.
PLANTS
How do I choose the right plant?
We choose and propagate plants that work well in the home work environment as they are easy-care, high oxygenation and available in a variety of convenient sizes for desk, shelf or floor. Check the approximate size and read the care advice on the product pages to determine levels of water and light individual plants require to determine which plant might work best in your space. Feel free to reach out to admin@theglasshouse.co.uk and our team will do our best to advise.
How do I look after my plant?
Read the care advice on the product pages to determine care required for individual plants. Ensure to place the plant in the appropriate place that fits with the advice given. As a general rule, people overwater rather than underwater houseplants, we always recommend you test the soil prior to watering. Many factors will influence how often your plant will require watering such as room temperature, sunlight and placement. You will receive a care advice card with your plant.
Are your plants child and pet friendly?
Whilst most of our plants will not seriously harm children or pets, there are some that could cause discomfort if eaten. Refer to the care advice on the product page to determine the safety of your plant, we will always do our best to ensure this information is accurate and up to date however, we source from reputable resources and we cannot be held responsible for their accuracy. We always recommend that our plants are not for consumption.
Do I need to repot my plant?
We strive to make all our products and packaging beautiful as well as plastic-free, ethical and sustainable. As standard, our plants are delivered in an appropriate-sized pot with a matching tray or ethical alternative. Generally, plants should not require repotting for approximately.
Can I choose a pot for my plant?
Currently small-medium plants purchased through our online shop arrive potted in our standard handmade grey terracotta Sutton pot with matching tray and larger plants arrive in an ethical alternative. For our corporate clients, we can source containers, pots and baskets from artisanal, ethical sources and plan to expand the selection of pots and containers available through our online shop soon.
Are the plants Peat-Free ?
Yes. Our plants are potted into our own houseplant compost that our team carefully mix themselves, each plant has compost suited to its genus.
