The Bird of Paradise is basically plant royalty. Grown at Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew since 1773, Sir Joseph Banks, director at the time, gave the plant its scientific name: Strelitzia reginae, named after Queen Charlotte (the Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz). Evidently the plant represents a good perspective on life. There you are! In Hawaii, this particular specimen grows wild up to 30 feet in height. In homes, it tends to arch majestically but if you have high ceilings it just might reach for the sky.

Likes bright light. Some direct light is good, especially early and late light.
WATER
The magic word is mist, as this one likes it humid. Keep soil moist but not soggy.
